    #16. Getting Ready to Talk

    This Conversation Will Help You…

    1. Say what kinds of things they feel is important to talk about
    2. Say what kinds of things/topics they’d like to share
    3. Say what are ways they can bring it up

    Think About This First

    • This conversation can help set the framework for future conversations, and can be used to establish some norms and expectations of how conversations can be brought up.
    • If you are out of practice talking about sensitive or difficult subjects, this is a good place to start.

    Having the Conversation

    Start here:

What are things that you think are important to talk about between friends/parents & kids, etc?

What are things you think we should talk about that we don’t talk about already?

What are topics that feel important to you and your peers in regards to dating and relationships?

    Continue:

Here are some things that I’d like to be able to be a resource to you about (adults)

I want to be open to you regarding any kind of subject

I feel comfortable talking about _________

I feel uncomfortable talking about __________

Maybe we can try talking about _________

Any time you want to bring up ________, I’m willing to listen

What are things I can do to help make it okay to talk about ________?

    Keep Talking:

Do you want me to bring things up sometimes?

What is the best way for me to bring something up with you?

What is the best way for me to bring up a worry with you?

What is the best way for me to bring up an uncomfortable topic with you?

When are some times you really don’t want me to bring up things with you?

What could we do If either of us ever feels uncomfortable or just not in the mood to talk about something?

Is there a good way we could let each other know?
